Capitol Region Watershed District /Signage & Collateral

Water Whisperers.

Capitol Region Watershed District’s (CRWD) mission is to protect, manage and improve the water resources of the Capitol Region Watershed District located in Saint Paul, MN. Their recently constructed building and site serves as a demonstration of many of the strategies they use in their work, including stormwater diversion, collection for use and water quality improvement. We have worked with CRWD on several projects to bring their new home and their work to life for neighbors and visitors.

Gamifying the mission.

CRWD asked us to design a set of wildlife art that could be made into cut metal stamps. The stamps were pressed into the still-setting concrete of the sidewalks surrounding the site late in their construction process. We then worked to develop a game to help visitors learn about all the wildlife that our local lakes and rivers support. Visitors walk the site, looking for wildlife concrete stamps that match the fun clues on the game card. Once they think they have a match, they pull up the window flap on the card to reveal if they are correct.

Follow the water.

There are many ways that CRWD had used their own building to demonstrate how we can all make changes to protect and clean our natural lakes and rivers. We captured these systems and techniques on illustrated interpretive signage installed on their site for the public to explore. The signs illustrate and explain how these various approaches work and visualize the hidden systems embedded in the building and underground. The signs also include tips that everyone can use.
